Malcolm Turnbull offers advice on how to beat Mandatory Data Retention

Classic Malcolm.

Australia's much-maligned but somehow-still-happening Mandatory Data Retention Regime starts today, October 13. To be honest, even finding that actual date on the internet was a bit of a hassle. Which we guess shouldn't really come as a big surprise given how shady the whole affair is. For an in-depth round-up of what the new laws actually mean and how they work, Connor Gamble has written us a GREAT ARTICLE, which understandably still manages to pose more questions than it can answer. That's through no fault of Connor's by the way, it's just symbolic of the entire law.

In terms of what you can or should do to protect yourself once the laws are introduced tomorrow, there's a heap of information out there, so to start with we've found a few simple things just get you started. The funny thing is, everything you're about to read doesn't actually break any laws, which makes you wonder what the point of a Mandatory Data Retention Law is if it can't even be policed properly. But hey, here we are.

We'll start off by letting our current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull explain how to get around the laws in a video interview from back when he was Communications Minister:

Malcolm Turnbull explains how to avoid his own data retention ...

it's just four days until data retention comes into force. so what about that device in your pocket? how do you stop the government from recording metadata from all of your phone calls and text messages?well there's nobody better to explain the ways around this than the main architect of the scheme. these tips are brought to you by the master of do-as-i-say-not-as-i-do politics, former communications minister and now prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Advice to get around a law from the man about to put it into place? Is that irony? We always seem to get it wrong, but it feels like irony.

We'll be talking plenty more about this over the next couple of weeks, and we've got some surprises instore we can't wait to show you.
