Premiere: Andrew Tuttle - Overnight's A Weekend

Brisbane/Meanjin musician/producer and songwriter Andrew Tuttle previews the first single of “cosmic Australiania” from his forthcoming new album Fleeting Adventure

Combining expertly plucked banjo with atmospheric guitars and otherworldly electronics is Andrew Tuttle, who makes his return two years on from his stunning fourth studio album, Alexandra.

Back with Overnight’s A Weekend, premiering on Pilerats today ahead of its release on Friday, the single is the first from forthcoming album Fleeting Adventure, which will be a gorgeous journey into modern experimental Australian music at its finest, combining elements from traditional Australian country and folk.

Of the song, Tuttle says: "Overnight’s A Weekend is the first song I wrote for Fleeting Adventure. The first time I left Brisbane since the world shut down, it was a quick trip down the highway to stay a night at the Gold Coast (about 1 hour south of home). It was such a little trip, one where most of the time I’d drive up and back easily, but it felt like A. Big. Thing. Being away for one night - not even 24 hours away from home - was weirdly as exciting and as exhausting as a longer trip.

Whilst it’s not intentional, I also think that the guests on this particular song really tie in with various senses of adventure as well. Steve Gunn, who added some absolutely ripping rhythm and lead electric guitar, is one of my favourite musicians and one who I’ve been lucky enough to tour with around Australia.

I met the French but Stockholm based Aurelie Ferriere at a ramshackle residency in the outermost parts of the French Pyrenees, and we became fast friends through bouncing ideas in the middle of nowhere. I’ve known Joe Saxby (aka These Guy) for about a decade now. Joe also played saxophone on my last album and we’ve shared quite a few show lineups over the years. Michael A. Muller of Balmorhea is one of a few people on the album who I became friends / collaborators with in the most ‘roaring 20s’ kind of way - being on a lot of the same playlists!

Our paths had technically crossed as I went to a Balmorhea show at Funkhaus in Berlin a few years back (only a day or two after the residency where I met Aurelie!), I didn’t know them before then but had a lovely time at the show. Becoming playlist buddies and having surprise time on our hands ended up working well."
